Gilly Carr

Gilly Carr is Professor of Conflict Archaeology and Holocaust Heritage at the University of Cambridge. She is also a Director of Studies in Archaeology and Fellow of St Catharine’s College. Gilly is a member of the UK delegation of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and a member of the Academic Advisory Board for the UK’s Holocaust Memorial. In 2020 she was awarded the European Heritage Prize for her work with Channel Islands’ victims of Nazism. From 2023-24 she coordinated the Lord Pickles Alderney Expert Review, and in 2025 she was honoured with an OBE for her services to Holocaust research and education. 

Gilly is the author of over 80 publications, including 16 monographs and edited volumes. Her latest book, A Materiality of Internment explores the experience of Channel Islanders’ deportation and internment through the artwork and objects they made, coupled with interviews and archival documents.
