Local artists invited to design cover of 2027 Guernsey Short Story Anthology

We've teamed up with Art for Guernsey to invite local artists to submit artwork for the cover of Small Treasures, the second volume of the Guernsey Short Story Anthology, which will be published next year.

Following the success of the first anthology, Time & Tide, the new collection will bring together 20 stories by writers with a connection to the Bailiwick and will be launched at the 2027 Festival.

Artists are invited to respond to this year’s theme, Small Treasures, which explores the hidden value in the smallest things, from a lost object or fleeting moment to a quiet act of kindness. The theme is deliberately broad, giving artists the freedom to interpret the idea in their own way.

Ruth Thomason, Anthology Organiser, said: “It was wonderful to see the first anthology bring together the Bailiwick’s writing and artistic communities, and we’re delighted to do that again for our second volume.

“Small Treasures is a theme with so much potential for both writers and artists. We’re looking forward to seeing the different ways artists interpret it, and ultimately to one of those pieces appearing on the front of the anthology. It will be another real celebration of local creativity.”

Artwork can be created in any medium including photography, with artists asked to submit a digital copy of their piece online, It must be portrait (6:9 ratio) in orientation to fit the front cover of the book.

Digital submissions will be reviewed to create a shortlist, with selected artists then invited to submit their original works to Art for Guernsey for final judging.

The winning artwork will feature on the cover of the published Small Treasures anthology and an exhibition of the shortlisted artworks will be on display at the Art for Guernsey Gallery during the Guernsey Literary Festival. The winner will also receive their choice of 5 books from the Festival line-up. The deadline for art submissions is 30 November.

David Ummels, Founder and Chairman of Art for Guernsey, said: “Last year we were really impressed by the artworks submitted by Guernsey-based artists responding to the themes covered in the first anthology, Time & Tide. It is always a pleasure to collaborate with our friends at the Guernsey Literary Festival, and it’s fantastic that we have such a wealth of creative talent on the island. Small Treasures is an inspiring theme, and the Art for Guernsey team is very much looking forward to discovering how artists choose to interpret it.”

The artwork competition runs alongside the Guernsey Short Story Competition, which is currently inviting writers aged 18 and over with a connection to the Bailiwick to submit short stories, flash fiction or creative non-fiction of up to 2,500 words. The Guernsey Short Story Competition is generously sponsored by Sarnia Hotels, and supported by Blue Ormer and U&Us. The deadline for story submissions is 16 November.

A Kindle edition of the first anthology, Time & Tide is available to buy on Amazon.
