Like many people, I went to St James this morning to see Janet Street-Porter. Her book Life’s Too F****** Short has been translated into 17 languages so it’s a message that has obviously struck a chord internationally! Janet has been a journalist since the age of 21 and writes as she speaks, imagining the reader is there and she is talking to him or her. Her talk was funny, honest and covered her career, personal life and passions for walking and gardening. ‘Believe in yourself, don’t apologise for being here’ was one of the best pieces of advice Janet had to share.

Unfortunately, Dr Lucy Worsley had to cancel her trip to Guernsey due to illness. A big disappointment to many, but we wish you all the best for a speedy recovery, Lucy, and hope to see you next time.

The Poetry Slam final at St James was great. Farrago Poets John Paul O’Neill, Deanna Rodger and Katie Bonna have been doing their thing in schools throughout the week and we got to see the excellent results of their work.

Huge congratulations to Sam, James and Adam from Elizabeth College, Emily from the Grammar School and eventual winner Hayley from St Sampson’s High. You were all brave and brilliant! The professionals also gave us a taste of what they do, and I was particularly touched by Deanna’s poem about a seemingly privileged girl and Katie’s piece about her brother, Cheap Paracetamol. 'Touched' is a bit of an understatement – I was actually wondering if I’d be able to locate the packet of tissues in my handbag before I messed up my mascara.

The judges were Livia Bluecher, fellow blogger Ric Carter and the wonderful Stephen May. Thanks for the feedback on the Festival, Stephen, and please come back and see us again.

I almost can’t believe that the 2014 Guernsey Literary Festival is over. It’s been 18 months in the planning and, as part of a wonderful committee, I feel privileged to have been a part of it. Thank you for your interest and your involvement, it’s been a blast.
