

Founder of Sandhurst, Maj-Gen John Le Marchant - ‘A Most Able Officer’

John Gaspard Le Marchant was born in 1766, his father from a prominent Guernsey family, his mother French. He joined the British Army aged 16 and became one of the most accomplished cavalry officers of his time. It was his vision and determination that truly set him apart. In 1801, he founded the Royal Military College that transformed officer training. The College later moved to Sandhurst, evolving into the prestigious Royal Military Academy.
His legacy still shapes military leadership to this day. Join us as we explore the remarkable life and achievements of Guernsey’s own John Gaspard Le Marchant.
