Football - the real stories, with Jonathan Wilson
by Nick Le Messurier

You watch English and international football on television and listen to former players give their guarded views on what you just saw. Or you read the same blow-by-blow account in the newspapers the next day.
But wouldn’t you rather discuss the real stories behind football? Is top class football too much business and not enough fun? Who is the world’s best coach of all time? How does Big Sam manage to save the relegated from relegation? What is it in their backgrounds that makes Mourinho and Guardiola hate each other?

Who is the hardest player of all time and how does John Terry compare? Why are Orient in such a mess? And what’s all this about West Ham and Newcastle?

In other words, an intelligent football conversation for the real football connoisseurs.

Guardian football journalist Jonathan Wilson, a talented writer who is steeped to his soul in the beautiful game, will be discussing all aspects of the sport in a special event held at the Golden Lion as part of the Guernsey Literary Festival in May.

Jonathan has written for FourFourTwo and is the founder and editor of the football quarterly Blizzard. He has written a number of football books and Inverting the Pyramid, a history of football tactics, won 'Best Football Book' at the British Sports Book Awards in 2009.
He has also published books about Brian Clough, Sunderland FC, Liverpool and the international performances – and under-achievement – of Argentina.

Jonathan Wilson will be in conversation with the Guernsey Press’s own football fanatic, James Falla, at the Golden Lion from 7.30 to 9 pm.
