The Write Stuff Competition

A writing competition for students

YOUNG WRITING TALENT

Gabriel Buchanan, Casper Bailey and Daniel Lilley were the class winners in the Writestuff young people’s writing competition organised as part of this year’s Guernsey Literary Festival.
Gabriel’s story mixed football with the supernatural, Casper’s covered a writer’s obsession, and Daniel’s centred on a man imprisoned for murder. The writers’ brief was to create a character in just 300 words.
The competition, which was sponsored by Julius Baer, was open to all school pupils in Guernsey, from year 3 to upper secondary, and split into three age groups. Almost 300 entries from 13 schools were received.
The competition judges were local writer Tony Booth and Rachel Mahy, and their final judging was from a shortlist prepared by Ann Bryant. The winning stories are illustrated by artist Rob Sweeney.

There will be a special awards ceremony on Sunday 14 May at 5pm in the Festival Hub on the Market Square, where the winners will be awarded their prizes.
The first prize in each category is £50 cash, the trophy for the year, a certificate, the story illustrated on the website and the original illustration for the winner to keep. Second prize is £25 cash, a certificate, the story illustrated on the website and the original illustration for the student to keep, third prize is £25 cash, a certificate, the story illustrated on the website and the original illustration to keep.
Writestuff certificates and pencils will be given in the week after the Festival to all entrants, who are also invited to the awards night.
